The Security Leaders SummitSM - Northeast 2010 was held on Friday, October 1, 2010 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York, New York.

Attendees from Connecticut, Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York, and Pennsylvania had the opportunity to meet with their peers and discuss their latest issues and challenges and how they are addressing preparing for the future.

Summit Recap

Emcee Richard Warner, TV personality and CEO of What’s Up Interactive, kicked off the Summit with an overview of the latest in industry trends and consolidations.

Morning keynote speaker, Dr. Edward Amoroso, Senior Vice President and Chief Security Officer of AT&T Services, provided insights into what he sees evolving in information security, what security professionals need to be thinking about for the future, and issues that need focus.

Ed’s presentation focused on several areas, including the need for security groups to start responding to indicators versus incidents, as at that point it is too late. In addition, he shared with the group his belief that there is no longer a perimeter and security needs to be addressed differently in the future. The audience had plenty of questions for Ed during Q&A.

During “Insights and Interviews”, emcee Richard Warner interviewed Tom Dunbar, Senior Vice President, Global Chief Security Officer at XL Group and Deborah Snyder, Chief Information Security Officer at NYS Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance. The interview session focused on what will be needed for security executives to be successful in the future.

After a great lunch with opportunities to network with peers and sponsors, the Summit was back in session.

As Security Services Executive for IBM’s Global Technology Services, Don Kneitel spoke on “Cloud Security”. Don touched on topics including delivery models, barriers to adoption, customer concerns, defining categories of risk, governance and compliance. The session ended with interactive discussions with the audience. Download a copy of Don’s presentation

During the afternoon Executive Roundtables, a variety of topics were discussed including data leakage prevention, moving security operations into mainstream IT operations and developing a mobile security strategy.

Ted Ritter, Senior Research Analyst with Nemertes Research closed the day with their latest research into security trends and their implications.  Including key findings from interviews with IT executives across the U.S., the Summit was the first time the research was released to the public.

At the evening reception, the new information security leadership book, “SECURE” was released. The book includes contributions from many of the Security Leaders Summit executive hosts and sponsors.

“Information is now the most valuable global economic force. In order to succeed in the global market, countries and businesses alike, need to effectively manage, secure and provide integrity for their information. The contributors to this book provide valuable insight on how to plan and execute in this always changing arena.” Geoffrey Aranoff, Chief Information Security Officer - Broadcom Corporation.

During the Summit and Reception, attendees had the chance to discuss their challenges and hear about the sponsors' product and service offerings in the Sponsor Pavilion.

McAfee, Inc. revealed on Sept. 27, 2010 that business leaders worldwide see the value of Web 2.0 in supporting productivity and driving new revenue - but remain deeply concerned about security threats associated with deploying the technology. A survey of over 1,000 global business decision-makers in 17 countries found that half (50 percent) of businesses were concerned about the security of Web 2.0 applications, with 60 percent concerned about loss of reputation as a result of Web 2.0 misuse. Seven out of ten organizations (70 percent) have already suffered losses averaging $2 million, for a collective loss of more than $1.1 billion in security related incidents last year. Brazil, Spain and India led in adoption of Web 2.0 technology for business, while adoption was lowest in Canada, Australia, the United States and the United Kingdom.

The report, titled “Web 2.0: A Complex Balancing Act – The First Global Study on Web 2.0 Usage, Risks and Best Practices” commissioned by McAfee and authored by faculty affiliated with the Center for Education and Research in Information Assurance and Security (CERIAS) at Purdue University, examines the drivers for Web 2.0 and social networking use in business, and assesses their benefits and risks. In addition, McAfee will also be hosting a Webcast on October 6, 2010 at 2pm EDT, titled Bridging the Web 2.0 Security Gap, with Chenxi Wang, Forrester Research.
