The Ritz Carlton Buckhead
Atlanta, Georgia

The Security Leaders SummitSM - Southeast 2010 was held on Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia. With executives attending from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, the Summit offered attendees the opportunity to collaborate, share best practices, and challenge their thinking.

Summit Recap

Bob Varsha, Host and Announcer of Formula 1 Racing of The Speed Channel kicked off the morning with a high energy video on Formula 1 racing and technological innovations. His speech provided insights into how the $5 billion racing industry is working towards protecting data associated with the most sophisticated machines in the world. With a combination of facts and behind the scenes stories that included a one-hundred million dollar fine for theft of information by one high profile team, Bob brought the world of Formula 1 to life for the audience.

Emcee Richard Warner, host of the weekly television series “Georgia Business” and now CEO of Atlanta based web design company What’s Up Interactive, interviewed Larry Brock, Chief Information Security Officer of DuPont and Jeff DiMuro, Vice President at PGi, in the session “Insights and Interviews - Protection of Intellectual Property in the Global Economy”. As CISO of DuPont, founded as a gunpowder mill in 1802 and now the second largest chemical company in the world, Larry discussed his efforts in building an environment to protect his company’s trade secrets which range from greater employee awareness to the implementation of a variety of technologies to detect and prevent data leakage outside the company. With responsibilities for strategic development at PGi, a leading global provider of cutting-edge audio, video and web meeting solutions with locations in over 24 countries, Jeff shared his views on the protection of IP which focused on building the right foundation of understanding who is entitled to specific data, limiting access, and employing technologies to prevent data to be saved locally by an employee or third party.

After a great lunch with opportunities to network with peers and sponsors and a drawing of a luxury prize for a stay at a Ritz Carlton anywhere in the world, the Summit was back in session.

As Security Services Executive for IBM’s Global Technology Services, Don Kneitel spoke on “Making Cloud Computing Safe”. Don touched on topics including delivery models, barriers to adoption, customer concerns, defining categories of risk, governance and compliance. The session ended with interactive discussions and questions from the audience focused on best ways to work with service providers, acceptable levels of risk, and future direction of cloud computing. During the afternoon Executive Roundtables, a dozen topics were discussed including web application security, regulatory compliance, the exploding growth of viruses and malware, identify and access management, governance, and data loss prevention. Each of the roundtables were facilitated by Summit hosts who provided a debrief at the end of the session that included the compelling points discussed. The consensus of the group was that most of the topics still present significant challenges as the environment grows in complexity.

The business content of the Summit wrapped up with the CEO of Freud USA, Russell Kohl, speaking to the audience on what he views as compelling dialogue with a security organization. Russell advised the group to engage in security as a philosophy versus a function of the business and that conversations with a CEO should focus on how the security organization can have positive impacts to the business. As a CEO he tunes into how security can protect the company crown jewels; intellectual property, exclusive customer contracts, innovative KPIs, new product launches, financials, and strategic plans. In discussions with a CISO, he finds value in understanding how his company compares to the competition, what are the compliance regulations that have major impact to his industry and anticipated changes, how are the crown jewels being protected, and what would happen if the crown jewels got into their competitor's hands.

At the evening reception, champagne corks popped for the contributing authors, including Tim Searcy, CISO of Protective Life, of the newly released book on IT security leadership, “There’s a New Sheriff in Town”.

Executive Alliance does a great service to our country and the state of Georgia by bringing together security leaders from all types of industry, and providing a safe environment to share and learn about advancements in our industry. The most recent event brought these thought leaders together and challenged them to view security through a different set of eyes, those of a corporate CEO. These busy executives have many demands for their time, and ultimate responsibility for their organizations. Russell Kohl, President and CEO of Freud America, Inc., presented his perspective of security, and integrating security decisions into executive suite decision processes. His insights challenged each attendee to think outside of the pure concepts of security and to place it into the broader context of organizational enablement. Mark Reardon, CISO - State of Georgia, Georgia Technology Authority
Participating in the Executive Alliance Security Leaders Summit in Atlanta on August 19th was a great opportunity to discuss information security issues with other security professionals.  The forum focused around real world issues that many companies and educational institutions are experiencing.  This event gave me the opportunity to learn about what other companies are doing and to network with other security professionals. I look forward to the next event. Ed Robbins, IS&T IT Infrastructure and Information Security Director - Lockheed Martin Aeronautics
