The Security Leaders SummitSM - Southeast 2011 was held on Thursday, June 9, 2011 at the Ritz Carlton Buckhead in Atlanta, Georgia.

With executives attending from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Tennessee, the Summit offered attendees the opportunity to collaborate, share best practices, and challenge their thinking.

Hosted by security executives, the Summit focused on the expanding role of the CISO as a key business leader. Presentations included insights into a CISO's focus on the future, key success factors, panel discussions, and best practice sessions, and interactive roundtables with topics including cloud computing and mobility. Summit Recap

Richard WarnerEmcee Richard Warner, TV personality and CEO of What's Up Interactive, kicked off the Summit with remarks on current events in the industry.

 

Robin BienfaitMorning keynote speaker, Robin Bienfait, CIO of Research in Motion, shared key data points on the mobile environment, the rapid shift of consumers and employees to new mobile devices, and her perspective on where mobility is headed. With RIM carrying one third of total network traffic, Robin brought to light the massive movement from email to social media moving across the networks.

 

Insight InterviewsDuring "Insights and Interviews", emcee Richard Warner interviewed Chris Schroeder, Vice President of Information Security, Lowe's Companies and Tim Searcy, Chief Information Security Officer with the Protective Life Corporation. The interview session focused on the increasing pace of change and how they are dealing with it, building capabilities to successfully move an organization to a mobile environment, and their insights into how they influence their organizations.

 

James MesserJames Messer, with Gold Sponsor Palo Alto Networks, focused on innovation surrounding next generation firewalls. James presentation received high marks from attendees on the information he provided on what's traversing our networks, why new solutions are needed to protect against modern applications and threats and how next generation firewalls are being positioned with capabilities to help solve these challenging security issues.

Homeland Security ProgramUnder our "New Programs" session, the University of Georgia announced their executive program focused on Homeland Security & Emergency Management to be held at their recently built $13 million facility in Griffin, Georgia. The program will start in January 2012 and focus on several core areas including business continuity. The program is expected to be extended to a Masters program over the next several years. UGA, in partnership with Executive Alliance, will be hosting an open house in late summer in Atlanta.

 

Julian RichardAfter lunch, Julian Richard, CIO of E.Sams Jones Distributor, George Brockman, CIO of AirMed International, and Barbara Kunkel, CIO of Troutman Sanders discussed their perspectives on the value of information security to an organization. The CIOs covered sphere of influence and protection of the organization's intellectual property.

Executive RoundtablesAlways highly rated by attendees, the Executive Roundtables provided the opportunity for the executives to break out into smaller discussion groups on a wide variety of topics including social media, mobility, governance and compliance, and metrics.

 

Will AlexanderA CISO's "Focus for the Future" included panelists Will Alexander, Vice President of Information Security for RaceTrac Petroleum, Diana Tullio, IT Director, Strategy and Architecture for NCR and Ed Sarama, Chief Security Officer and Senior Vice President, Enterprise Risk & Resilience of Fiserv. During the panel, the executives shed light on where a CISO's focus needs to be for the future, challenges that will need to be overcome, and how they are preparing to deal with these challenges.
